Freelance Writing

While there are many types of home-based businesses, writing at home can be one of the most lucrative. Freelance writing jobs have been around for a very long time. Opportunities to write exist online and off for newspapers, magazines, travel brochures, blogs or newsworthy articles. With the advent of the Internet, home-based freelance writers have found a very lucrative business available in copywriting, ghostwriting, and article writing for web content.

If you can write a page everyday, have knowledge of a variety of subjects; if you can write clearly, concisely and in different voices, then freelance writing may be your calling. Before you choose this path however, it is important to research the available writing jobs available. You'll want to be able to write in the style the articles are intended for. Many web developers are looking for good content writers who are able to write in either a friendly conversation tone, professional research tone, or in a soft sell or advertising mode. You must also decide if you want to write in your name or a pen name. There's nothing unusual about being a ghostwriter either. This means all rights to your work get transferred to the purchaser of your content.

While writing the great American novel is a dream of many, realistic writers understand the value of earning income as a ghostwriter. Most ghostwriting content jobs are available in the nonfiction field. If fiction is what you're looking for, perhaps some research into publishing houses and writing books is where you need to go.

Finding jobs on the Internet for ghost writers and freelance writers isn't difficult. There are a number of websites where you can look into writing jobs and discover whether you're the writer they need. DemandStudios.com is one such website. If you are going to place your services on freelancer.com or another similar site, be sure to be a professional when bidding on jobs or offering your services. Strange e-mail address names, or unclear, inconcise bids will turn a purchaser off. Be sure to have several samples of your writing available and tailor write a sample for particular jobs if you need to. Your samples and your bid are going to be the first thing that your future purchaser looks at so make sure they're professional, concise and grammatically correct.

The other thing that you're going to need should you decide to be a freelance writer is a very reliable Internet connection. There's nothing more frustrating for a purchaser of your content material to not be able to get hold of you because your Internet connection is down, your computer is frozen with viruses, or your attachments are not coming through properly.

Choosing whether to write for print materials such as magazines or newspapers, or to write for Web content depends on how often you'd like to be paid. Months can go by before you are paid for writing articles for print material, as the article submission takes time to wend its way through the publication processes. Web content writers on the other hand, are looking for fast turn around and need their content as soon as possible and therefore pay quicker.

Writing articles as a freelance writer, whether as a ghostwriter or with a pen name and byline of your own can be a lucrative career for an at-home business. Dedication to deadlines, clear concise content, and determination to succeed is what it's going to take to be a freelance writer.
